1a) Mexican students protested against Govn. using funds to support Olympics rather than socio-economic issues
1b) Mexican army surrounded them and opened fire killing 200 and injuring 1000
2a) Peter Norman supported human rights movement and wore a badge that read ‘Olympic Project for Human Rights
2b) Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists as a Black Power Salute and bowed their heads during USA’s national anthem in supports of the Civil rights movement
2c) This lead to the IOC banning both black athletes
Describe the events of 1972 MUNICH OLYMPICS. What political views ALLOWED this to happen?
- 8 Palestinian terrorists associated with the Black September Org. killed Israeli athletes
- And took 9 hostages for the release of 200 Palestinian prisoners
- Munich was part of East Germany at the time and had a relaxed approach to security
- To show how they’ve developed since the Nazi age

- 22 African countries boycotted after IOC refused to ban NZ from games
- NZ toured S-Africa who were banned since 1964 due to Aparthied policies
- After Munich terrors an extra $100m was put towards security (80% more of inital costs)
- Contributed to $1.6b in debt which was paid off in 2006
