What is the Sensory Motor Stage?

(Piaget, First Stage)

Birth - 2 Years

No Object Permanence - Show an infant a toy and then hide it. Child will think that it is gone

Lacks Language! Uses senses instead (sight, sound, touch etc)

-Exhibit egocentric thought and language

Concerned with absolutes, child is able to think in black and white

(Piaget, 3rd Stage)

7 - 11 Years Old

Begins to think logically

Solves Conservation tasks (Pour the same amount of liquid into two differently shaped glasses, can figure out which are the same)

Solves logical equations (Ex: 2 +2 = 4)

Thinks abstractly

Solves complex and hypothetical problems
