Ladders 1 PL Flashcards
(37 cards)
PL rungs are spaced at _” intervals
14”
Discoloration on PL may indicate _
Loss of structural strength. Fire Tools & Equipment Unit shall be notified
Upon receipt of spare rig, ladder brackets should be checked for holding capabilities. If they cannot be held securely _
If PL cannot be temporarily secured _
Fire Tools & Equipment Unit immediately notified by telephone along w/requisition forwarded & entry in journal. Check Temporary fastenings after each response;
Leave PL off rig & enter in journal
Unit Designation shall be marked within _” of each butt end
18”
Simple formula for obtaining 75 degree angle is to place base of PL a distance from vertical plane equal to _
1/4 total working length of ladder.
Working length= Distance from base of ladder to top of its support
PL Placement: Placed at window=
Placed at roof=
Placed alongside fire escape on bldg wall=
Placed against a fire escape=
Window= tip level w/window sill
Roof= Tip shall be at least 2’ above roof/parapet
Alongside fire escape= tip shall be 1-3’ above fire escape railing
Fire Escape= Tip slightly above fire escape railing
How is leg lock performed on PL
Leg performing maneuver is opposite working side. The locking leg is placed over & under rung that is 2 rungs above the one on which member is standing
PL Capacities for Collapsible ladders_
Roof, straight, & Extension ladders (26’/less)
Extension ladders (27-35’)
Collapsible up to 300lbs
26’/less up to 500 lbs
27-35’ Up to 600 lbs
Use of PL to bridge a fence:
Use 2 short PL & short length of rope/hose strap & FF ascends PL until top of fence is waist level. Butt end of 2nd PL passed to FF on 1st PL. Slide on beam to proper climbing angle. Tie adjacent beams where they intersect
Can PL be used in TL Basket:
Yes for purpose of saving life in Extreme emergency conditions when basket has reached max height
PL placement for Tenements & MD w/o front fire escape for fire in cellar, 1st floor, &/or 2nd floor
Raise PL adjacent to & above fire area even if AL will be required on upper floors
Front fire escape Tenement & MD: PL placement if overcrowded fire escape
Raised to 1st balcony at point opposite drop ladder. If more relief needed-2nd PL raised to 2nd balcony
How would you get a PL to the rear of a Brownstone
Take it via 2nd fl (Parlor) of an adjoining brownstone & pass it out rear window to another FF in yard below (faster than using fire bldg)
PL to rear of Rowframe
Via interior of fire bldg is generally less complicated because there are front & rear doors/window entries at ground level
In Brownstones it’s important to take PL through w/_ facing rear of bldg.
_ ladders are preferred at Brownstones
Butt
Extension
Can PL be used to force lexan windows
Yes use butt of ladder in corner adjacent to window frame w/3 or 4 FF’s applying gradual leaning pressure forcing inward
Member on PL to force a window shall place PL
Tip of ladder level with, or higher than top of window
Can extension ladders be used for bridging
Can a PL positioned by FF to gain entry be repositioned
Yes but only in nested position
Do NOT reposition except to use PL for rescue. Members operating the area of the PL must be notified & it shall be returned to its original location ASAP
Can Extension ladder be used upside down
Do NOT climb higher than _ rung on PL
Never
3rd rung on PL for either straight & extension
Candle wax, paraffin, & grease shall be applied every _
3 months to all contacting surfaces
Pulleys are found on all extension ladders. These pulleys have ball-bearing centers that require 1-2 drops of oil every _
Once a year
Aluminum ladders are tough. They will _, but not _ or _ when subjected to severe impact nor will they fail due to overloads.
Dent; chip or crack. They will bend not break as wood does
Numerical length shall be marked on side of rails within _” of end of ladder
Straight ladder mark _vs Extension lad
12”
Straight= marked on end of each rail
Extension= butt end only of each rail of bed ladder
Climbing angle for ground PL =
65-75 degrees
