TB Fires 8 Flashcards
T/F Immediately upon arrival at an operation on a highway, the OIC must take steps to prevent escalation of the incident in the form of a secondary collision. This includes stopping traffic flow in all lanes of the highway on side of fire/emergency until arrival of PD
True
Greatest danger of secondary collision _
During periods of light to moderate traffic volume w/the usual accompanying high speed
Wet pavement & weather factors can _ stopping distances
Double the stopping distance
During freezing weather- call _ for spreading salt/sand
Sanitation
Can both sides of the highway be closed
Where weather conditions or smoke blowing across highway limit visibility, the highway must be closed on both sides
Who is assigned on all expressway highway incidents
One Engine, One Ladder from each direction & BC. No fewer than 2 units shall operate at an incident on express highway. At least 1 rig other than pumper used to extinguish fire shall block traffic
What must members use at highway emergencies/incident
High Visibility Safety Vest
Where should the 1st rig usually be positioned at incident or emergencies on the highway
Rear of incident placed at an angle- exception fire in flammable liquid or hazmat carrier on a grade: Uphill placement
If the 1st rig had to go past an emergency where must the 2nd rig be placed?
2nd & 3rd rig if necessary, shall always be placed between oncoming traffic & operating forces
Blocking apparatus shall be placed _
At least 50’ behind
Who is exempt from wearing high visibility safety vests
Members directly involved & in immediate vicinity of firefighting, Hazmat mitigation, or Technical rescue (Hurst tool). Once their tasks are completed- they are req’d to don safety vests
When should flares be used
When should cones be used
Flares- at night & periods of reduced visibility. Do NOT use flares if flammable liquid/gas leaks
Cones- both day & night.
How many cones/flares shall be used to block a lane or roadway
4-6
What is the proper way to place flares
With vest worn, before leaving rig light 1 flare & carry it lit to proper distance. Furthest flare/cone is placed 1st w/req’d number of flares carried over. Walk on shoulder or divider facing traffic
What is the minimum distance furthest flare shall be placed?
Use fastest speed expected (NOT speed limit sign if expected traffic moving faster). Multiply 1st number by 10% and add 60. Ex- 60 mph- 60 X 6 = 360 + 60= 420’
The furthest flare/cone is placed_’ from edge of roadway. the next flare is lit & placed equidistant back to scene of operations moving about _’ further into roadway at each point
2’; 2’
After traffic is stopped, _ members should place flares/cones
2 FF’s
Are flares waterproof
How should flares be carried
No: secure in a dry compartment
Horizontal position & never look directly at lit flare
Flares burn approximately
30 minutes
Can we operate across a center divider on an express highway
Should be avoided, but if absolutely necessary traffic should be stopped in both directions. ASAP the rig on the opposite roadway should leave
For elevated/depressed roadways- PL, AL, TL may be used. How shall they be placed?
Shall NOT extend beyond shoulder where they could be exposed to moving traffic. AL/TL should be cantilevered parallel to elevated roadway
How many vehicles shall be chocked
Rig and each car involved in the accident/emergency
Fires in the engine compartment- if the hood is difficult to open- what shall be done?
Pry up side of hood & operate stream through this opening. Do NOT attempt to operate through front grill
What kind of spray shall be used on magnesium fires
Coarse spray
