Lecture 19 Flashcards
(19 cards)
What were the results of the bridge study?
Men who went over the bridge with a female interviewer were more likely to be attracted to them.
What was the procedure for the weather study?
– Participants were called on sunny rainy days and rated their life satisfaction and
– Before rating, some participants were asked “how is
the weather down there?” .
What were the results of the weather study?
- Life satisfaction judgments influenced by current mood.
- Mood influence disappears when current mood is believed to be non-diagnostic for judgment - attributed to the weather.
What was the procedure for AMP?
- Press a key indicating a Chinese pictograph was visually pleasing.
- Some would have a warning.
What were the results of the AMP test?
- A few more people rated it as unpleasant when given a warning.
- People had more pleasant ratings for their own race.
What was the procedure for the fist implicit prejudice study?
- Have a prime photo that’s black or white.
- Task is to classify word as good or bad.
What were the results of the fist implicit prejudice study?
- Black primes»_space; more facilitation of negative words,
less facilitation of positive words than White primes - Facilitation scores (weakly) predicted behavior towards a Black person
What is recorded on IATs?
Latency, or reaction time.
What’s the theory underlying the IAT effect?
- Ease/speed of giving the same response to exemplars of two concepts measure the association between the two concepts.
What’s one problem with the IAT (cognition)?
It depends on cognitive capacity.
What was the procedure for the flowers vs insects study?
- Compare flowers vs insects
- Compare insects vs. non-words
What were the results of the insects vs non-words test?
- Insects = bad (against flowers)
- Insects = good (against non-words)
What’s the interpretation of the insects vs flowers test?
It is easier to associate two unfamiliar salient categories. Negative words are less frequent and thus easier to associate with other rare categories.
What were the results and conclusion from the Diana/Thatcher test?
- British = good, foreign = bad
- The result holds regardless of the valence of exemplars (Diana as good as Thatcher)
- IAT works on the level of category. It says little about the respondent’s reactions to specific individuals.
What was the research question behind the Diana/Thatcher test?
Does IAT examine associated to categories or to exemplars?
What was the research question behind the Apples vs. Candy bars study?
Does IAT predict behavior in choice situations?
What was the procedure in the apples vs. candy bars study?
- Ask an explicit measure of attitude
- Implicit measure of attitude (IAT)
- Choice between apple or candy bar.
What were the results of the apples vs. candy bars study?
IAT did not predict choice, but explicit measures did.
Does change in implicit bias cause change in behavior?
Little evidence.
