Does NaCl dissolve in water? If so, why?
Yes it dissolves. Ionic bonds are broken in water and ions bond to the h2o molecules
Do fats dissolve?
No
Do sugars dissolve?
Yes, polar molecules form intermolecular bonds
What is the basic unit of life?
Cells
What is the basic unit of matter?
Atoms
Why can carbon make so many different molecules?
Carbon is one of the few elements that can have 4 separate bonds. This makes it easy to create long chains and allows carbon to be the backbone of most biological molecules
Why does cl steal an electron from Na instead of vice Vera’s
Na has one loan electron on the 3rd shell as where cl has 7 electrons on its 3rd shell. This means moving the Na electron is easier than moving all 7 Cl electrons. To create the neutral charge
In hydrogen bonding. What bonds are covalent, And which ones are hydrogen?
The bonds that connect the initial H to the Oxygen are polar covalent. Bonds that are connecting to oxygen in a different order are the hydrogen
What is an electrolyte solution?
A solution with salt consisting of charged ions that when dispersed in water will create a flow of electric charge.
What 2 specific processes in the body require that body fluids are electrolytes?
Nerve conduction and muscle contraction
What happens to denatured proteins
They lose their structure and no longer function
What 2 factors cause proteins to denature
Extreme heat and extreme salts
More H+ means what? In terms of PH
More H+ ions means lower PH, less H+ ions means higher PH
A solution with a Ph of 8 has less or more H+ than a solution with a PH of 3
Less H+ ions than PH 3
What is the range for PH in our body?
7.35-7.45 Ph
The 4 macromolecules
Lipids, carbs, proteins, nucleic acids
Monomers of lipids
Fatty acids
Monomers of carbs
Monosaccharides; ex: Glucose
Monomers of protein
Amino acids
Monomers of nucleic acids
Nucleotides
What properties of phospholipids allow it to form all cell membranes?
?
What is the storage form of carbs in humans?
Glycogen
what macromolecule is stored in fat cells
Triglycerides
The macromolecule that acts as the energy source for all cellular work
Proteins
