Mode of action

NA+/K+/2Cl- co-transporter in LoH
Inhibitor
Reduces Na+, K+, Cl- reabsorption
Most powerful diuretic = Excretion of 15-25% filtered Na+

Indications

Oedema
Congestive Heart Failure
Renal failure
Resistant hypertension

Adverse drug reactions

Oto + Nephrotoxicity
Hypotension
Hyponatraemia/kalaemia
Hypercalcaemia
Increase pH and Urea

PRESCRIBING ADVICE

Not with w/ Aminoglycosides or NSAIDs
Works within an hour orally
Works within 5 minutes with IV furosemide
Lasts 6 hours
