Mendelian and non-Mendelian inheritance Flashcards
(8 cards)
Genes
Segments of DNA
Allele
1 or 2 or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome
-Often recognized by letter “F” “f”
Genotype
2 alleles present at a specific locus in the genome. Refers to entire genetic makeup of an individual
-Ex. “Ff”- heterozygous; “FfDd”
Phenotype
individual’s observable traits produced by the interaction of the genotype
-Ex. Height, eye color, and blood type
Dihybrid cross
cross between 2 individuals for 2 observed traits that are controlled by 2 distinct traits
-Ex. “FfDd”
-“Traits are inherited independently one another, indicating no genetic link between 2 traits”
-FOIL- First, Outside, Inside, Last
-Ex. “FfDd”
1) FD
2) Fd
3) fD
4) fd
Non-Mendelian inheritance: incomplete dominance
-Form of a gene interaction in which both alleles of a gene at a locus are partial expressed
-“RR”- red rose, “rr”- white rose, “Rr”- pink rose
Non-Mendelian inheritance: codominance
a type of inheritance in which 2 versions (alleles) of the same gene are expressed to yield difference traits in an individual
-Ex. “Bw”- white w/ black feathers- both traits expressed w/o saturation
-Both alleles contribute to phenotype in a visible manner
