Nervous System Flashcards
(33 cards)
Nervous system
Made up of brain, spinal cord, and nerves
CNS
brain and spinal cord
-Functions:
-Process info
-Command center
-Motor response or regulate body mechanisms
PNS
everything outside of the brain and spinal cord
Function: sensory info for CNS
-2 groups:
1) autonomic
-involuntary
2) somatic
-voluntary
Cerebral cortex
substrate for conscious experience
Frontal lobe
deep thought and decision making processes
Parietal lobe
located at the top and back of the head; sensory info
Temporal lobe
hearing and rhythm in speech and memories
Occipital lobe
-Association areas allow for complex analysis of internal/external environment
-Focusing on vision
Cerebrum
Divided left and right hemisphere
Primary motor cortex
-Location: parietal
-Initiations voluntary motor movements
Sensory cortex
-Location: Parietal lobe
-Touch, sight, hearing, taste, and smell are to or physical experience. It’s the part of the brain that processes and interprets sensory information from the body and the environment
-Allows us to consciously aware of what’s going on
-Ex. Touch hot stove
Association cortex
Further analyses info (ex. Hot stove- assess temp to determine if it’s just warm of scolding hot; also utilizes past experiences- aid in primary somatosensory cortex)
Limbic system
Memory and emotional aspects of behavior
Gray matter
site of (info) integration and processing
White matter
signal highways
Forebrain functions
-Contains primary motor and sensory cortices
-Association areas allow for complex analysis of internal/external environment
-Limbic system: memory and emotional aspects of behavior
-For us to be aware of thoughts, sensations, and actions, they must be process through superficial layers cerebral hemisphere (houses limbic system)
-Highest aspects of cognitive function
-Substrate for conscious experience
Hindbrain houses
-medulla
-pons
-cerebellum
Medulla
Functions: “Managers
-Regulation of breathing, BP, and heart rate
Pons
Functions: “Passes”
-Transmits signals between forebrain and cerebellum
Cerebellum
Functions: ”Coordinates”
-Balance and movement coordination
Midbrain functions
Alertness, sleep/wake cycle, motor activities
-“Mid controls” Movement
Involvement in sleep/wake cycle
-Detection of auditory and visual reflexe
Autonomic nervous system
-Part of PNS
-Functions:
-Internal temp
-Regulating GI function
-Excretory and endocrine systems
-Cardiac muscle activity
-2 groups:
1) sympathetic NS
2) parasympathetic NS
Somatic nervous system
Functions:
-Motor functions of skeletal muscles (voluntary and somatic)
Neuron
-Cell body
-Axon
-Enclosed in myelin sheath made up of fats and lipids
-Long fibers that carry signals away from neuron to other cells
-Axon terminal
-Connects to other neuron
-Dendrites
-Branch-like structures
-Receive signals from other cells
-Synapse
-Point at which neurons communicate w/ each other
-At axon terminal
