Milgrams variations Flashcards
(20 cards)
baseline experiment
experiment 5 (original study)
new baseline details
- lab was in a plain room with bare steam pipes
- remarks about a heart condition was made
- this didn’t affect results as 26/40 reached 450v
what did learned say in baseline 5 in regards of their heart condition
‘when I was at the west haven hospital a few years ago they detected a slight heart condition, nothing serious but are these shocks dangerous’
rundown office block aim
to investigate whether the social setting of the experiment effects obedience levels
rundown office block procedure
- moved from Yale uni to a rundown office block in Bridgeport
- 3 different rooms were used, clean with no furniture
- run by an independent research firm
results rundown office block
- 47.5% obeyed
conclusions rundown office block
-led to lower levels of obedience than baseline, setting has an effect
- reduction from 65% may be due to questioning legitimacy of experimenter
what may have contributed to dissent in rundown office block
- participants didn’t believe the social setting to be a highly regarded lab so did not deem experimenter competent when giving commands
- shabby lab, expectations and intimidation were lowered
telephonic instructions aim
- investigate whether the physical presence of the experimenter effects results
procedure telephonic instructions
- experimenter gave initial instructions to the participant in same room
- all further communications were done through the phone
results telephonic instructions
22.5% obeyed
conclusion telephonic instructions
physical presence of experimenter is a force when it comes to obedience
telephonic instructions - what led to dissent
- over the phone it could be argued there was no legitimate authority
- not in presence of experimenter / wall rooms act as buffer so they feel less pressured to obey
- lack of physical presence
what did some participants do - telephonic instructions
- administered lower shocks than were required and didn’t inform experimenter
- told experimenter they were raising shock level but still only have lowest shock
- pps felt it was easier to give false information that would hinder study than precipitate an open break with authority
ordinary man procedure
- Milgram removed status from experimenter presenting him as an ordinary person
- experimenter gives instructions to a point about administering shocks
- rigged phone call takes place causing experimenter to leave lab
- experimenter acts flustered to have experiment finished
- told participants they should continue with experiment until word pairs are learned perfectly
ordinary man aim
to investigate the power of the experimenter and see if it was how the command was given that was more influential or whether it was the person giving the order which had more influence over obedience
ordinary man results
20% obedience
conclusions ordinary man
participants are more likely to obey depending on how they perceive authorities status to be, e.g wearing a lab coat adds more legitimacy
why did the participants go to dissent in ordinary man
- they didn’t deem nan competent as he appeared flustered, unorganized and unsure of what to do
- made them question judgement of the man
