Q

Top-down processing

A

Forming perceptions based upon personal experiences (making sense of new data w/ past experiences) different from person to person (I look at alfredo differently than obama does) Vision dominates how we see in what we believe (movie theater; sound from the action/actor? When it’s really in the back)

Q

Gestalt

A

German translation “whole or complete” Founder: Max Wertheimer Perceptual organization:The minds drive to see, or create, meaning from sensory data Focused upon perception from holistic(whole person grow through environment- James) vs structural perspective (wundt & titchener- human behaviors parts) -The mind seeks to make sense of the world

Figure and ground

A

Perceive objects (figures) in relationship to its background (environment) Looks like 2 faces on 1 hand or 2 faces on the ground?

6
Q

Proximity

A

Close objects and figures are grouped 2gether (123, 456, 789,) = 3 group of #s opposed to #s 1-9 instead of seeing all we group them, freshmen year we go with st.als bffs instead of seeing everyone as potential classmates.

Q

Similarity

A

Similar objects and figures are grouped together (we tend to group together like objects) (A row of red squares, and a row of white circles opposed to a vertical row of alternating circles and squares)

Q

Continuity

A

Continuous patterns are perceived instead of discontinuous ones (half circles next to each other or a wavy line intersected by straight line

9
Q

Closure

A

The tendency to fill in gaps To Create a complete, whole object ( pac man) we see it as a triangle instead of pac man shapes

Q

Retinal disparity

A

The difference between images on each retina provides cues to the brain in judging distance and depth

A

Comparing objects similar in size, the smaller one is perceived as farther away ( big box, small box )

Q

Interposition

A

An objects which blocks the view of another is perceived as closer (the one blocking the object) (Triangle half way in front of box)

15
Q

Relative height

A

Objects I the distance the taller objects closer and the smaller one higher as farther ( two triangles one is taller)

16
Q

Linear perspective

A

Parallel lines appear to converge with distance The more the lines converge, the greater the apparent distance (Mountains with highway; highway converges to make a sense of distance)

17
Q

Size- distance

A

(Moon at night that comes up through trees; the moon in realshionship to the horizon is large but the high in the sky the smaller it is)
