T5 - Group Dynamics + Team Cohesion Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is the difference between a group and a team?
Group: 2+ people who interact and influence each other; Team: group with shared goals, identity, roles, communication, norms
What are group dynamics?
The actions, processes, and changes that occur within and between groups (Forsyth, 2014)
What does group dynamics include?

What is the linear model of group formation?
Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing - a sequential developmental process
What is the circular model of group development?
Group lifecycle: formation, performance, dissolution; applies to short-term/fixed groups
What is the pendular model of group development?
Focuses on shifts in group relationships over time: orientation, conflict, cohesion, termination
What are group roles?
Set of behaviours expected of someone in a group position
What are the two types of group roles?
Formal (assigned) and informal (evolve from group dynamics)
What is social loafing?
Motivation loss when individuals exert less effort in a group
What are causes of social loafing?
Perceived unimportance of effort, minimising strategy, allocation strategy, lack of recognition
How can social loafing be reduced?
Make individual effort visible, stress its importance, and increase accountability
What could you do if some players are disengaging during team practice?
Increase visibility of effort, give individual feedback, clarify importance of each role, and improve accountability
