encomienda system
a system of forced labor of native peoples by the spanish as a way to increase farming profits of spanish colonies in the new world.
pueblo revolt
pueblo people get angry with the treatment of the spanish so they attack and kills spaniards. they get scared and move to santa fe where the pueblos lay siege causing the spaniards to flee to mexico. spanish come back twelve years later with much more respect.
jamestown
in virginia. first permanent english settlement. result of england’s attempt at joint stock companies. established in may 1607.
john smith
helped found and govern jamestown. his leadership and strict discipline helped the virginia colony get through the first difficult winter.
john rolfe
he was one of the English settlers at jamestown (and he married pocahontas). he discovered how to successfully grow tobacco in virginia and cure it for export, which made virginia an economically successful colony.
virginia house of burgesses
1619 - the first legislative body in colonial america. later other colonies would adopt the same system.
mayflower compact
1620- the first agreement for self government in america. it was signed by the 41 men on the mayflower and set up government for the plymouth colony.
william bradford
led the pilgrims and was the second governor of plymouth.
plymouth plantation
the pilgrims’ settlement in massachusetes. founded in 1620.
puritans
protestants that did not separate for the church of england but wanted to purify it.
