embargo of 1807
US ships could not trade with any european nation because of British impressments.
the war of 1812
a war between the US and great britain caused by american outrage over the impressment of American sailors by the British, the British seizure of American ships, and British aid to the Indians attacking the Americans on the western frontier.
clay’s american system
henry clay advocated for a strong national bank, protective tariffs, and federally funded internal improvements in order to advance american industry.
market revolution
america went from self-sustained southern farms and relying on imports to northern industries connected with southern farms and made an interconnected economy. made possible by advancements in machinery and transportation.
hartford convention
federalists met in 1814 in opposition to the war of 1812. they created a list of resolutions mostly focused on lessening the south’s power and considered secession although they ultimately denied it.
monroe doctrine
(1823) declared that Europe should not interfere in the affairs of the western hemisphere and that any attempt at interference by a European power would be seen as a threat to the US.
mccullouh v maryland
after maryland attempted to put a tax on the national bank, it was decided that federal government had the power to impose a national bank and that states did not have the power to tax it.
missouri compromise
as missouri was established it became a slave state, so maine was made and was a free state as to not create an imbalance between slave states and free states.
john quincy adams
secretary of state under john monroe and president. heavily contributed to the monroe doctrine.
worcester v georgia
georgia attempted to enforce state laws on the cherokee nation. john marshall in the supreme court declared this to be unconstitutional as the cherokee were a distinct political nation. jackson did not care and took land from the Cherokee regardless.
