Truman Doctrine
Established by President Harry Truman in 1947 that stated the United States would provide military and economic aid to any nation threatened by communist takeover. Part of containment plan.
Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was a program of economic aid to rebuild Europe after World War II. It was a key part of the United States’ Cold War strategy to contain communism, but not only for that. The money had strings attached and was a loan.
McCarthysim
Also known as the Second Red Scare, was the political persecution of left-wing individuals and a campaign spreading fear of communist and Soviet influence on American institutions and of Soviet espionage in the United States during the late 1940s through the 1950s. The political practice of publicizing accusations with insufficient regard to evidence.
HUAC
Investigating committee which investigated what it considered un-American propaganda. This congressional Committee investigated Communist influence inside and outside the US government after WWII.
Modern Republicanism
Represented by President Eisenhower, it combined acceptance of the basic features of the New Deal with a conservative economic policy, particularly controlling government
spending.
National Defense of Education Act
A piece of legislation passed in 1958 that significantly increased federal funding for education in the United States, particularly in science, mathematics, and foreign languages, primarily in response to the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik and the fear of falling behind in the Cold War space race.
Brown v. Board of Education Topeka
A Supreme Court case which ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, overturning the “separate but equal” doctrine established in Plessy v. Ferguson and marking a major turning point in the Civil Rights Movement; the case centered around a young Black girl who was denied enrollment at a white school in Topeka.
Little Rock 9
a group of nine African American students who attempted to enroll at Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas in 1957, marking a significant moment in the desegregation of public schools following the Brown v. Board of Education ruling.
Baby Boom
A significant surge in births following World War II, between roughly 1946 and 1964, where a large generation of Americans were born.
Bay of Pigs
A failed military operation in 1961 where the United States, under President John F. Kennedy, supported a group of Cuban exiles in an attempt to overthrow the communist government of Fidel Castro in Cuba by landing at the Bay of Pigs.
