Truman Doctrine
Aided any country threatened by Soviet communism. Came after Greece and Turkey were pressured to help Soviet goals while they had political chaos, economic issues, and are close to Russia. Potential for communism which would mean failed containment. Gave 400 million dollars to each country’s military.
Marshall Plan
Gave money to European nations to rebuild. As they were struggling to rebuild, communists seemed like they had a good plan to help. Aimed to prevent another war. Strings attached- it is a loan and you have to buy the stuff from the US.
Berlin Blockade
Prevented the US from entering West Berlin as they were creating hope for democracy there. Hoped to get it under Soviet control, but this was prevented by the Berlin airlift.
NATO
Military alliance to fight against aggression from the Soviets. Western peacetime military alliance. US’s first time in a peacetime alliance. Soviets formed a counter alliance, the Warsaw Pact.
Nuclear proliferation/Arms Race
Arms race between the USSR and US. USSR announced the goal of catching up with the US in tech. Kept accumulating more and more powerful atomic weapons. Didn’t use them as it would result in mutual assured destruction.
Proxy Wars
Didn’t directly fight but backed different sides. Vietnam and Korean.
Korean War
USSR ruled North Korea and US ruled South. North invaded South with Soviet supplies so the UN sent many troops, mainly US, pushing the Soviets back to China you pushed them back also.
Iron Curtain
Line in Europe that divides Europe allies and Soviet allies.
Atomic Energy Act
Use the tech of the atomic bomb to make something beneficial for the people. Ends up just building bigger bombs.
Yalta Confrence
Makes 4 regions of Germany - Berlin has western influence but it is behind the iron curtain which the soviets hate (Berlin Blockade)/
Berlin Airlift
11 months with many flights to help westerners in Berlin and not make west Berlin not become communist. Threatens to atomic bomb USSR is they shoot the planes.
