the ear: balance and hearing defects Flashcards
(7 cards)
Which parts of the ear help with balance?
The semi-circular canals (cristae) and the sacculus & utriculus (maculae).
How do maculae help maintain balance?
They detect changes in head position and send impulses to the cerebellum, which signals muscles to adjust.
How do the cristae in the ampullae help maintain balance?
They detect movement of endolymph in the semi-circular canals during motion and send impulses to the cerebellum.
What causes middle ear infections?
Pathogens entering through the Eustachian tube, causing fluid buildup and inflammation.
How are middle ear infections treated?
With medication or grommets (small tubes inserted in the eardrum for drainage).
What is deafness?
A partial or total loss of hearing due to injury or damage to parts of the ear or brain.
How is deafness treated?
Using hearing aids or cochlear implants.
