the ear: terminology Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the pinna?
The outer visible part of the ear that collects sound waves.
What is the tympanic membrane?
A thin membrane (eardrum) that vibrates when sound waves hit it.
What are the ossicles?
Three small bones (malleus, incus, stapes) that transmit vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear.
What is the Eustachian tube?
A tube that connects the middle ear to the throat and balances pressure on both sides of the eardrum.
What are the ossicles?
Three small bones (malleus, incus, stapes) that transmit vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear.
What is the cochlea?
A spiral-shaped organ in the inner ear that converts sound vibrations into nerve impulses.
What is the organ of Corti?
The sensory part of the cochlea that contains hair cells to detect sound.
What are semi-circular canals?
Three fluid-filled canals in the inner ear that help maintain balance.
What are cristae?
Receptors in the ampullae of the semi-circular canals that detect changes in movement.
What are maculae?
Receptors in the sacculus and utriculus that detect changes in head position and gravity.
