the eye: functions Flashcards
(16 cards)
Where are the light receptors in the eye located?
In the retina, at the back of the eye.
What are the two types of vision made possible by overlapping fields of vision?
Binocular vision and stereoscopic vision.
What is binocular vision?
Vision using both eyes to create a single image from overlapping fields.
What is stereoscopic vision?
The ability to see in 3D and judge distance, depth, and size.
What is the function of the sclera?
It protects the inner structures and maintains the shape of the eye.
What is the function of the cornea?
It allows light to pass through and bends (refracts) incoming light.
What is the function of the choroid?
It absorbs light and supplies oxygen and nutrients to the retina.
What is the function of the ciliary body?
It contains muscles that change the shape of the lens for focusing.
What is the role of suspensory ligaments?
They hold the lens in place and adjust its shape during accommodation.
What is the function of the iris?
It controls the amount of light entering the eye through the pupil.
What is the function of the retina?
It contains rods and cones to detect light and send impulses to the brain.
What is the yellow spot?
The area of clearest vision with many cones.
What is the blind spot?
The area with no rods or cones where the optic nerve exits the eye.
What is the function of the lens?
It focuses light on the retina by changing shape.
What is the function of the aqueous humour?
It maintains the shape of the cornea and helps bend light.
What is the function of the vitreous humour?
It maintains the shape of the eyeball and helps bend light.
