tissue, organs and systems Flashcards
(11 cards)
define the term tissue
a group of cells that are the same or similar working together to perform the same function
what is the difference between a tissue and an organ
tissue is made up of cells that work together to perform the same function and organs are made up of tissues that work together to perform a more complex function
why is an artery an organ but a capillary a tissue
an artery is an organ as its composed of multiple tissues working together to perform a specific function whereas a capillary is a tissue as its mainly made up of a single layer of endothelial cells
what type of cells are capillary’s made up of
endothelial cells
where would you find squamous epithelial tissue and how is its shape important
its found in areas where diffusion is crucial such the lining of the blood vessels and in the alveoli
how is squamous epithelial tissues shape important
as it is thin and flat this makes it efficient for gas exchange and rapid movement of substances in and out of blood vessels
which organelles would you expect to be abundant in a goblet cell
-endoplasmic reticulum
-Golgi body
-mitochondria
where would you find ciliated epithelial tissue, what do the cilia do
would be found lining the trachea
what do the cilia do
cilia beat in coordination to form waves on contractions to move mucus, trapped dirt and pathogens away from lungs towards the throat
what is the difference between striated and smooth muscle
