U3 KA1 Flashcards
(21 cards)
The nervous system can be divided into 2 parts
•central nervous system
•peripheral nevous system
PNS has 2 main parts
ANS and SNS
The CNS contains 2 parts
Brain and cord
Peripherals nerves contain a sensory pathway made of what?
Sensory nerves
And they have a motor pathway made of
Motor nerves
What do sensory pathways carry?
Impulses from receptors to the CNS
The brain analyses the info and sends nerve impulses along what
Tye motor pathway to effectors which are muscles and glands
What does this causes
A response like muscle contraction or hormone secretion
SNS contains What
Sensory and motor neurons
What do these sensory and motor neuron’s do
Control the voluntary movement of skeletal muscles
SNS also brings about some involuntary actions such as
Reflex response
ANS is the opposite so it controls what
Involuntary actions that regulate the bodies internal environment
ANS is made up of two systems
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
What are these two systems
They are antagonistic in action (they have opposite action)
The effects sympthetic system brings
Heart rate - increase
Breathing rate- increase
Perilistalis- decrease rate
Production of intestinal secretions- decreased production
What is peristalsis
Muscle movement that pushes food through digestive system
Intestinal secretions
Digestive fluids released into the digestive system
Neurons that connect to each other through synapses form what
Neural pathways through the nervous system
Impulses from several neuron’s travel to one nueuron increases what
Increases the sensitivity to excitatory or inhibitory signals
Impulses from one neurone can travel to several neuron’s, what does this cause?
More than one destination being affected at the same time.
Neurons later in the pathways link with earlier neurons sending what back?
Impulses back through the pathway, allowing repeated stimulation of the pathway
