Unit 2 Part 2 Flashcards
(25 cards)
Old Brain (Reptilian Brain)
Brainstem, Thalamus, Cerebellum, Reticular Formation
Brainstem
- Brainstem
- Pons
- Medulla Oblongata
- All are the 1st part of the brain formed in the womb, it connects the brain to the spinal cord
- It’s job is to keep you alive by doing auto survival functions (breathing, heartbeat, swallow, body temp, etc.)
Reticular Formation
Controls Arousal (Awakeness/Alertness)
Thalamus
How the brain communicates with itself
Cerebellum (Little brain)
In charge of muscle memory. (walking, eating, etc)
Limbic System
Amygdala, Hypothalamus, Hippocampus, Pituitary Gland
Amygdala
In charge of the fight or flight response
- Controls the emotions of fear and aggression
Hippocampus
Processes short term memory into long term memory
Hypothalamus
In charge of the emotion of reward and basic maintenance functions (eating, drinking, regulating body temp.)
- Brain of the endocrine system
Ventromedial Hypothalamus
Controls hunger
Pituitary Gland
Hypothalamus uses the PG in order to communicate with other glands of the endocrine system
- Helps with physical growth (often at night)
Cerebral Cortex
- Most advanced region of the brain
4 Regions - Occipital, Temporal, Parietal, Frontal
Occipital
Process our vision
Temporal
Process our hearing
Parietal
Process sense of touch
Frontal
- Fine motor movement
- Emotion control
- Planning and judgement
Brain isn’t done forming till age?
age 25
Motor Functions
Motor Cortex, Somatosensory Cortex
Motor Cortex
- Region of the brain that controls the motor function of specific ares of the body.
Somatosensory Cortex
Region of the brain that controls the sense of touch in specific areas of the body
Association Functions
small areas of the brain that have specific high-functioning tasks
- Broca’s Area
- Wernicke’s Area
Broca’s Area
- Can write
- in the left hemisphere frontal lobe
- In charge of the fine motor movement of mouth while speaking.
Wernicke’s Area
- cannot write
- left hemisphere of the brain in the temporal lobe
- in charge of language expression and language understanding
Corpus Collasum
Band of neural fibers that commands the 2 hemispheres of the brain
- left side of brain = right side controlled vice-versa
