Unit 4- Lymphatic System Flashcards
(13 cards)
List the 3 functions of the lymphatic system
- Defense response
- Drain excess fluid
- Provide alternative highway for fluid to travel instead of arteries and veins
How are Lymphatic vessels like veins in structure and direction?
contains capillaries and vessels and vessels get larger as they get closer to the heart
Flow in an afferent direction and have valves to prevent backflow
Name the fluid that travels through lymphatic vessels
interstitial fluid
What is the order of the flow of lymph, interstitial fluid, and plasma
Plasma —> interstitial fluid —> lymph
What classifies an organ as part of the lymphatic system?
- ability to house or produce Lymphocytes (white blood cells)
- Contain Lymphatic vessels for an alternate fluid route with filtration
Identify the lymphatic organs and their locations
- Tonsils (throat)
- Thymus (posterior to sternum)
- Spleen
- Peyer’s Patches (small intestine)
- Bone Marrow (bone)
- Thoracic Duct
- Right Lymphatic Duct
Which is the only lymphatic organ capable of producing lymphocytes or white blood cells (WBC)?
Bone Marrow
Which lymphatic structure allows the maturation of lymphocytes?
Thymus
Identify the 2 lymphatic ducts that allow for drainage of lymph. What percentage of lymph does each duct drain into the cardiovascular system?
- Right Lymphatic Duct- 25%
- Thoracic Duct- 75%
What occurs if lymphatic fluid is not picked up by lymphatic capillaries in the tissues?
lymphedema (swelling of lymph)
Describe the function and location of the spleen. From what artery does the splenic artery branch?
Function:
* Principal Lymphatic organ
* Filters and stores blood
* Removes “old” Red Blood Cells
Branches from celiac trunk
Describe the function of a lymph node
filter
Name the vessels that carries lymph into and out of the lymph node
Into- Afferent Lymphatic Vessel
Out of- Efferent Lymphatic Vessel
