1. India and Egypt farm cotton, west Africa palm oil: profits to buy manufactured goods
2. Ranching in Argentina/Uruguay and type guano for food

    Opium Wars because China won’t buy stuff from GB (unfavorable): sell illegal drugs instead, gov. tries to stop: loses 2 wars, forced to open ports &missionaries (spheres of influence)
    Buenos Aires port made by GB near GB factories: need GB to keep using it or will be indebted: export only what GB wants (meat)

  1. Population++; from diets and medicine (limited resources/jobs)
  2. Famine at home (potato style) - go for food and jobs (industry down from death)
  3. Railroads/steamships: go to cities, able to go back and forth (Italians to AG for industrial work, home for harvest, Lebanese for jobs/out of Ottomans, come back to family)
  4. Search for work: Irish, Chinese, Italian cuz economy mid (China railroads) – factories
  5. Forced to go: slave trade or penal labor (AU/FruzzG)
  6. Indentured servitude: poor Indians go to Caribbean to farm sugar, Chinese for tin in Malaysia

  1. Gender imbalance: women farm and sell stuff (cassava)
  2. Enclaves: Chinese food and Chinatowns to Peru/US (working on railroads y plantations), Hindu caste/practices (abandoned caste later) to sugar plantations in Africa, Irish catholicism to protestant US
  3. Restrict it: Chinese Exclusion, White Australia (Chinese taking jobs for cheap! Riot!)
