Q

How does vealey’s model work?

A
  1. The performer approaches a sporting situation with two things. Their level of competitiveness and their trait confidence overall- confidence towards all sports
  2. They will then access the objective sporting situation- the task and the situation
  3. A combination of these three factors will produce a level of state confidence at this stage the performer will be drawing on past experiences.
  4. Performer will occur
  5. If the performance is successful trait state and competitive orientation will increase
  6. If the performer fails trait state and competitive orientation will decrease. Continued failure can lead to learned helplessness or future avoidance behaviour

Q

What are the positives of the home field advantages?

A

-Home team often wins due to home support increasing players motivation and confidence.
-No fatigue/tiredness from travelling can lead to a more energetic performance.
-Home team tend to play a more attacking style of play giving them a greater chance of scoring.
-Familiarity of surroundings helps players to feel more comfortable with the environment leading to optimal arousal/avoids over arousal.
-Can lead to ‘functional assertive behaviour’ where the home team play with more dive
-Since large crowds watch expert players, the proximity of the crowd means social facilitation could occur.
-Crows hostility causes opposition players to become anxious/lose concentration and perform poorly.

Q

What are the negatives of the home field advantage?

A

-Home crowd can have a negative effect on the home team. Causing the home team to ‘choke’ in big games.
- Increased pressure can cause the catastrophe effect and players suffer a dramatic reduction in performance
-The more important the game, the less likely the home team is to win.
-The effect of the home team advantage is increased in stadiums where the crowd are close to the pitch. In large stadiums the crowd may be fat away therefore the home support is ineffective.
