Group Dynamics Flashcards
Lesson 13 (13 cards)
What is a group formation?
A collection of people who share similar goals and interact with one another
What are the 4 characteristics of a team?
-A collective identity
-Interaction
-Communication
-A shared goal or purpose
What does a collective identity mean?
This means the team can be recognised easily since they are usually wearing the same colour kit. Team members will feel a strong affiliation to the team and gain a sense of pride when they wear team clothing on their way to games. This affiliation is important to give motivation and a sense of belonging.
What does interaction mean?
Team members should operate in their own role successfully and be able to link this role with other members. Interaction can be seen as the way that team players work together to complete a task. For example mid-field players in hockey linking with the defence to help get the ball out from their 16
What does communication mean?
Helps with interaction, this is where individuals within the team talk to each other or communicate non-verbally. For example rugby players can use a coded call or a hand signal to indicate where the ball is being thrown in a line out
What does a shared goal or purpose mean?
The prospect of achieving success is what often keeps players in the team and working for each other. All team members should want to aim for the same gaol to maximise motivation
What is Tuckman’s Model and what are the five parts?
Once a team has formed and the previous characteristics begin to develop, Tuckman suggests there are five stages of group formation through which the group must pass to start working as a unit:
1. Forming
2. Storming
3. Norming
4. Performing
5. Mourning
What happens during the Forming stage of tuckmans model?
Short first stage, group comes together, Gets to know each other/bonding, individuals find out how they feel about the team and if they will fit it, roles and responsibilities are unclear
What happens during the storming stage of Tuchman’s model?
Many teams fail at this stage as there is conflict, Individuals ‘jostling’ for position in group, discussion of ideas-conflict of ideas, relationships can be strained-alliances former ‘cliques’, Boundaries are pushed-positions of authority are challenged, establishment of goals-coach and captain help resolve issues.
What happens during the norming stage of Tuckman’s model?
Conflits have been resolved/ agreement developed, goal is clarified and norms established, team begins to settle down and cooperate with the intention of achieving their goals, group standards are accepted so stability is gained, cohesion of the team develops, authority figures are determined, social connection
What happens during the performing stage of tuck mans model?
All players are interactive and working together to achieve their goals, team members support each other, individual roles and responsibilities are completely understood, best performance is achieved
What happens during the mourning stage of Tuchman’s model?
goals have been achieved, team might begin to break up or disband- end of season, there is a sense of job done
what does the length to complete this process depend on?
size of the task, difficulty of task, experience of the players
