Week 10 Flashcards
(12 cards)
Differential Reinforcement
- Two concurrent schedules of reinforcement
- One schedule for problem behavior (that we want to decrease)
- One schedule for appropriate behavior (that we want to increase)
Differential Schedule of Reinforcement
Favors desired behavior so the person allocates behavior to the greatest source of reinforcement while problem behavior is placed on extinction
DR Procedures
- DRL - Low
- DRO - Zero/Other/Omission
- DRI - Incompatible
- DRA - Alternative
Differential Reinforcement of Low Rates (DRL)
A schedule of reinforcement in which a reinforcer is presented only if a particular response occurs at a particular low rate
Limited-responding DRL (Quota Systems DRL)
Specifies a maximum allowable number of responses during a certain time interval in order for reinforcement to be delivered - number
- Spaced-responding DRL
Requires that a specified behavior not occur during a specified interval; after the interval has passed, an instance of the behavior must occur in order for reinforcement to be delivered - time
Differential Reinforcement of Other or Zero Responding (DRO)
- A schedule of reinforcement in which a reinforcer is delivered only if a specified behavior does not occur during a specified period of time
- Differential reinforcement of zero responding or differential reinforcement of other behavior… or sometimes omission
Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible (DRI)
A schedule of reinforcement in which a behavior that is incompatible with the problem behavior is reinforced
2 Important Steps in Implementing
Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible (DRI)
- Determine an appropriate schedule of reinforcement for increasing appropriate incompatible behavior (based on baseline data)
- While using reinforcement to increase incompatible behavior, use
extinction to decrease problem behavior
Differential Reinforcement of Alternative
(DRA)
Involves the extinction of a problem behavior combined with the reinforcement of a topographically different (but not incompatible) behavior
Using Differential Reinforcement Effectively
When possible, inform the learner of the program = use rules where it makes sense
