WEEK 10 PRACTICAL Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the 3 layers to thin/thick skin
- epidermis
- dermis (papillary and reticular dermis)
- hypodermis
What does the epidermis consist of?
keratinised stratified squamous epithelium- protects against friction and dryness
What does the papillary dermis consist of? what are its functions
loose connective tissue, containing the neurovascular supply to the epidermis. provides shock absorption/cushioning to the epidermis
What does the reticular dermis consist of? and what are its functions
it comprises dense irregular connective tissue, provides structural support, stability and elasticity to the skin
What does the hypodermis consist of? and what are its functions
Consists of adipocytes. functions include insulation, energy storage as fat, protection, anchoring superficial layers of skin
What are the 5 layers of the dermis from bottom to top
stratum basale
stratum spinosum
stratum granulosum
stratum lucidum
stratum corneum
What are the glands associated with the integumentary system?
sweat glands (eccrine and apocrine)
sebaceous glands
What are sensory structures associated with the skin?
hair follicles
arrector pili muscles
tactile epithelial (merkel) cells
tactile (meissner) corpuscles
lamellar Pacinian corpuscles
What are the two main parts of the lymphatic system?
- a network of lymphatic vessels that return fluid that has leaked out of blood vessels, back into the blood
-Lymphoid organs and tissues, which contain phagocytes and lymphocytes that direct the immune response
