No, once mineralized, plaque needs to be scraped off.

Non-foaming
Usually contains pumice, antibacterial agent and some type of flavor

Brushing pet's teeth

Need softer bristle brush for pets (if a human brush is used, pediatric brushes are best)
Train clients on how to brush their pet's teeth

Rinses and Gels

Help to reduce:
- bacteria
- malodor
Products:
- CET Oral Hygiene Rinse (Chlorhexidine)
- Oxyfresh (Chlorine Dioxide; reduces sulphur; comes in a gel)
- CET AquaDent (Glycerine, Xylitol - refrain from using this!!! Xylitol can cause hypoglycemia and liver damage in dogs, if ingested)
- Novaldent (Chlorhexidine - chelates Ca+, decreases potential to deposit minerals)
- MaxiGard (Zinc absorbate/taurine; comes in a gel)

Chlorhexidine
Invented by Fort Dodge (no longer existent)

Chews

Disrupt plaque and/or calculus by abrading teeth
Use with caution (foreign body obstruction)
Made in USA is best!
As long as you can indent w/thumbnail, ok to use
Owner needs to monitor & throw out once it's too small

Chew toy products

**Rawhides & CET chews are best! (Rawhides should not have tied knots at ends or be braided; rolled is ok)
**Kongs
NOT GOOD:
- Greenies (Salmonella, break teeth, intestinal obstruction)
- Nylabones (No!)
- Pig ears (can give pancreatitis from pig fat)
- Bones and cow hooves (No! Breaks teeth)

Foods for dental health

Help break down plaque
20% of diet
Fiber in dental food helps w/stool formation and anal sac issues as well
Products:
- T/D by Hill's Prescription Diet (fiber mesh)
- D/D by Royal Canine (fiber, polyphenol extract, antibacterial properties)

What can you use instead of pet toothpaste?

Baking soda
1 tsp per quart of water for dental cleaning

Gel by Merial
Pasty material to reduce reformation of plaque
Coat teeth after dentistry
Only adheres to clean surfaces or to itself
Can send it home w/client to be applied after teeth brushing

Strengthens enamel
Fluoride will seal dentin
Keeps surface of tooth cleaner for longer period of time
