There was widespread discontent
By 1919- thousands were poor and had the influenza epidemic
- many denied losing the war
- government was weak and ineffective

France and Belgium invaded Germany’s richest industrial land - the Ruhr
This gave them access to iron and coal so Germany went on a huge strike meaning the German industry was devastated once again which eventually led to hyperinflation
