About Geography on Brainscape

What Is Geography?

Geography is the study of the earth's features, population distribution, resources and the effects on human activities.

The study of the earth unravels many spatial questions. Geography probes the reason why the earth’s surface carries a natural environment and additionally the impact of people. Historically, the oldest maps date back to the 9th century BC when Babylonians (present-day Iraqis) constructed directions with coordinates.

With the advancement of technology; software can build maps within minutes on computers. Present-day techniques and research tools used by geographers include remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), and cartography. By explaining the earth's physical features, geographers help us to understand human cultures, communities, and deal with environmental threats.

Geography as a branch of earth science was used by colonial masters in exploring new continents. Hence, navigators like Christopher Columbus discovered continents of the Antarctic, Africa and the Americas. However, global warming, deforestation, and pollution are some of the modern day threats that geography is averting.

Careers in Geography

Geography is an exciting field which promotes the technology for satellite and location imagery systems. Subdivisions of geography include; human geography, physical geography (or physiography), geomatics, and integrated geography. Upon graduation from graduate or postgraduate schools, geographers can seek the following professional roles:

Cartographers (map markers)

Marine navigators

GIS specialists

Demographers

A prerequisite of geographers is a passion for surveys and field work. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is a society of professional and academic geographers that provides research and breakthrough information on earth science. You can also check out The American Association of Geographers or the American Geographical Society.

Learning Geography

Geography graduates will undertake fieldwork and practical experiments in class but they’ll be developing on core theories and principles.

Whilst honing these practical skills, geographers will be developing their critical and analytical skills and they’ll also be tasked with presenting their findings statistically. With all of these skills to master - geography graduates rely on knowing their core theories inside out.

Brainscape offers a near perfect complimentary study aid for Geography students. Whether it’s recalling information for a GCSE Geography exam or drilling down into complex theoretical concepts, Brainscape produces outstanding results, for every learner.

Geography in Brainscape

The Geography section of Brainscape has thousands of flashcards prepared by top experts and students from around the globe -- just waiting for you to discover!

If you’re a World Geography or U.S. Geography student, Brainscape has premium flashcards available to check out on this page. And if you’re a GCSE Geography student, an AP Geography or an A-level Geography student, Brainscape also has flashcards available on other dedicated pages.

You could also take a trip to other pages such as ecology, statistics and oceanography that geography majors may also find helpful. Or why not author your own flashcards for a personalized learning resource?

Learn faster with Brainscape

Following years of development, Brainscape has produced a learning system that stands head and shoulder above the pack. Confidence-Based Repetition or CBR, as we call it employs three proven learning methods to deliver a system that allows you to learn twice as fast and remember longer.

Seriously, twice as fast! It’s your choice if you want to leave your study and get out there and have some fun after half the usual time or cram some more!

The CBR system uses three powerful learning systems all rolled into one: Active Recall, Metacognition, and Spaced Repetition. Active recall is the method in which we recall information as opposed to merely recognizing it. Brainscape presents information in a manner that means learners must retrieve information; this process builds stronger neural connections and the information is stored and retrieved more effectively in the future.

Spaced repetition is the second method that Brainscape uses enabling learners to take in easy-to-digest pieces of information at timely periods. Once again, as you try to concentrate on recalling the information your hippocampus neurons will be working overtime strengthening your knowledge base.

You’ll see other computer-aided tools employing these methods but CBR is unique in fueling their algorithm by each learner’s metacognitive responses. The cognitive science sounds complicated but the user experience is flawless.

In practice you might be studying the Yellowstone Supervolcano, you might have just started learning this topic and as yet, you can’t remember all the information and data about a potential eruption. Consequently, you record your understanding as a  “2”. As a result, the flashcard will be repeated shortly until your knowledge increases. When you finally rate that flashcard a “5” you’ll have moved onto new subject matter and that flashcard will be shown very infrequently. All the while, the algorithm didn’t show you any cards on Haiti, Monserrat or Kobe, that you knew well, so you got up to speed in super quick time!

To take advantage of this unique learning tool to boost your potential, read on.
