Why did whites want Native American lands in the South?
More land for plantations and growing cash crops like cotton.
Indian Removal Act of 1830
Passed by Congress under President Jackson. This act removed all Indians east of the Mississippi Rive to an “Indian Territory” where they would be “permanently” housed.
Trail of Tears (1838-1839)
Forced march of 15,000 Cherokee Indians from their Georgia and Alabama homes to Indian Territory. Some 4,000 Cherokee died on the journey. They lacked enough food, blankets and other supplies to make the journey during the winter.
nullification
Idea that a state has the right to nullify, or cancel, a federal law that the state leaders consider unconstitutional.
Nullification Crisis
Argument between South Carolina and the federal government regarding the power of national government. SC threatened to secede from the nation over the issue of tariffs. President Jackson said he was not going to let that happened and even threatened to send in federal troops. SC did not leave the nation.
