What is a pilgrimage?
Is a part of someones spiritual journey, often a physical journey to a place of religious relevance
Why might a Christian go on pilgrimage?
It allows them to spend focused time on God and all their energy and thought upon him
What are some of the benefits of going of pilgrimage?
They get closer to God
Aware of the need for God through the physical hardships of the pilgrimage
A fresh sense of awe or belief
Describe Lourdes as a place for Christian pilgrimage

14 year old girl called Bernadette had visions of God
Since then a spring has appeared at the site and it is believed the water has healing powers
Roman Catholic Church built there
7000 registered healings and 67 confirmed as miracles
Participate in Church services at the Sanctuary of our lady of Lourdes
Describe Jerusalem as a place for Christian pilgrimage
Where Jesus lived towards the end of his life
Where he was died, buried and seen after his resurrection
Pilgrimage here allows them to see the Bible come to life and develop a stronger sense of belief
Some Christians may come over Easter and on Good Friday walk the Via Dolorosa which is where Jesus travelled for his crucifixion
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre has the stone of unction, many Christians pour oil on it and rub a handkerchief on it to take as a relic
Describe Walsingham as a place for Christian pilgrimage
Norfolk
11th Century the lady of the manor had a vision of the Virgin Mary’s home in Nazareth
The site is now a shrine and a statue of Virgin Mary was created
A focal point of this statue is a bottle which is said to contain milk from Mary’s breasts
Every day there a services held here
Describe Rome as a place for Christian pilgrimage
Vatican City is the HQ of Roman Catholic Church
St Peters Church, largest Christian church in the world, is built here above the remains of St Peter
Myth that says when Peter was fleeing Rome he had a vision of Jesus- Jesus told him that he was going to be crucified again, and being ashamed, Peter went back to Rome and ordered to be crucified upside down, not wanting the same death as Jesus
Home of the Pope- can visit and take part in mass led by the pope
