Why is Salah prayer important to Muslims?
First thing imposed by Allah
5 times a day
Both Sunni and Shia have this belief shared
With all Muslims praying at the same time in the same direction it creates a sense of community - Ummah
How does the Call to Prayer work?
From the minaret the first adhan is made by the Muezzin which reflects the Shahadah and then the Iqmah is made in the mosque which is the second call that prayer is immanent
What are 3 features of the Muslim call to prayer?
God is Great
The Shahadah
Prayer is better than sleep

If there is no water, sand of dust
After Wudu, a Muslim will say I bear witness that there is no God but Allah
What is a Rakah?

What happens during the Rakah
Cover ears and say Allah Ahbar, Allah is the only God for you
Kneel before him in respect
Prostrate before him in total submission
Turning your head to wish respect to the world
What is Jummah Prayer
Friday Midday Prayer
A male should make every effort to make it
What happens in Jummah Prayer
Muslims line up in rows, shoulder to shoulder - Ummah
Face the Mihrab (place in wall to show Mecca)
Once the Salah is complete the Imam delivers a sermon called a Khutbah
What is the Khutbah
Sermon given by an Imam does 3 things
1. Learn how to put the Qur’an in practise
2. Discuss and resolve communal problems
3. Sense of community
What is Shia Prayer
Shias also pray 5 times a day but can be combined into 3 - night time and evening
They prostrate on something natural such as wood or a clay slab from Kerbala in Iraq where it is believed to be sacred.
What conflicts to Shia and Sunni Muslims have with prayer
Shia muslims believe that you should not prostrate on something that is man made hence why Muhammad used a natural praying mat
Sunni muslims believe that use of clay from Kerbala suggests that Kerbala might be more important than Mecca and may cause Sunni extremists to cause violence in Kerbala
