Organization of African Unity - OAU
Founded by Kwame Nkrumah, the OAU was supposed to support Pan-Africanism.
The Algerian War for Independence
Algerians wanted independence from France, but because so many French people lived in Algeria, France claimed that Algeria was part of France, not just a colony. France refused to allow Algeria to become a separate country. France eventually sent a million troops to fight the Algerians seeking liberation. A LOT of Algerians died in the war and not many French troops died.
How did Algeria ultimately gain independence?
Charles De Gaulle outlined a plan and took the plan to the French and Algerian people for a vote. The people voted for Algeria’s independence.
Was Algeria peaceful after the independence vote?
No, another war broke out over the tensions of fleeing refugees.
FLN - National Liberation Front
A political group that led the movement for Algerian independence. They utlimately took control of Algeria after it became independent and became its authoritarian socialist government.
Algerian Civil War 1991
When the Islamic Salvation Front won a first round election, the FLN cancelled the elections. War ensued.

The communist leader of Vietnam.

The Suez Canal was built with French and some British Money from 1859 and 1869, in exchange for a 99 year lease. When Nasser seized the canal for Egypt in 1956, what happened?
The Suez Crisis - Israel invaded Egypt at the request of Britain and France. Britain and France then occupied the land around the Suez Canal.
How did the Suez Crisis resolve?
The United States and Soviet Union used the U.N. to broker a resolution - the Suez Canal would become an international waterway open to the traffic of all nations under Egyptian rule.
