How would you find out about the major infectious disease in WA?
- Notifiable infectious disease
- Non-notifiable infectious diseases (research, non-mandatory surveillance system)
Why are notifiable diseases reported?
- Prompt public health management of case and the contacts
- Early ID of disease outbreaks
- Evaluate the effectiveness of prevention programs (i.e. immunizations)
- Identify high risk groups for targeting prevention programs
- Health service planning
What are the most commonly notified infectious diseases (in WA and Autralia)
- Chlamydia, pertussis, influenza, campylobacter
what is R0?
The basic reproduction number. This is the number of secondary causes which one case would prpduce in a completely susceptible population
What are some events that require statutory disease notification?
Acute rheumatic fever, addiction to drugs, cancer, cervical cancer testing, death of women from pregnancy or childbirth, lead poisoning, HIV/AIDS, perinatal and infant deaths
Who can report adverse events following immunisation?
Both the doctor and the patient
