DT - Production Flashcards
Advantages of one off production
High quality
New designs can be experimented with
One of a kind
One off production
Designing/making a single product to a clients specification
Costly
Disadvantages of one off production
Slow manufacturing process
Expensive end price
Special materials often require special manufacturing techniques
Batch production
Each production is manufacturing a set quantity of goods to order
Can vary from 4 to 20,000 items
Advantages of batch production
Batches can be repeated
Money saved by bulk buying materials
Can buy in pre-made parts to save time
Disadvantages of batch production
Flexible and skilled workers required for different batches
Setting up of jigs is time consuming
Job planning and time management is essential
Costly manufacturing down time
Mass production
Industrial scale manufacture
Large quantities of product
Suitable for products that seldom need to be redesigned and are needed in large numbers
Advantages of mass production
Fast
Money saved by bulk buying materials
Skilled workforce not required
Cheapest production cost compared to other to Batch and One off
Disadvantages of mass production
Automated manufacture reduces workforce
Products can not be changed easily
Expensive CAM setup
Continuous-flow production
When many thousands of products are made
Difference between mass production is that production is constant to eliminate expenses of stopping
Often automated
Just in time production
When a company only buys enough Stock to cover it’s immediate needs
Reduces storage cost
Ensures the right amount of material arrives when needed
