Human Bio Unit 1 - How our body's defence system works Flashcards
Antigen
Any substance capable of inducing a specific immune response and reacting with products of that response
Can be found on pathogens
Pathogen
An agent that causes disease
Especially a living microorganism such as a bacterium or fungus
First line of defense and why it’s effective
Skin
Outer layer is dead
Constantly being replaced
Holes in the body and how they are protected
Eyes - tears

Mouth to stomach - stomach acid
Anus - secretement, flushes it out
Urethra - urine, flushes it out
Vagina - acid
Inflammation
The bodies attempt at self protecting
Aim is to remove harmful stimuli
How does inflammation happen?
Injury happens
Bacteria invade
Mast cells triggered
Mast cells releases histamine
Causes the blood vessel to swell and become leaky
Neutrophils attack and destroy the bacteria
How does inflammation help fight bacteria?
The better blood supply raises the temperature
This slows the bacterias reproduction
