(7 cards)
aim
to develop a valid and reliable measure of blood anxiety and blood phobia symptoms for people who speak spanish as their first language
@ the time was no ques for this population specifically
sample
39 people w blood phibia
135 matched controls
all ps from andalusia spain
avg age 24
two groups matched on age marital status and educational level
methodology
completed ques of 50 situations about agoraphobia and social phobia and blood injection phobia
rated how often they exeprienced cognitive bio and behavioural phobic responses on a 4pt likert style scale
to make fnal list of items the researchers removed items that made no diff between avg scores in phobic and control grp
best 18 items selected
phobic grp interviewed to gather additional info about phobia and completed fear ques FQ marks and matthews 1979
assess symptoms of agoraphobia social phobia and blood injection phobia
results
there was a strong pos correlation between BIPI score and scores on the blood sub section of the FQ
people w blood phobias obtained significantly higher on the BIPI than people without a prev diagnosis of blood phobia
conclusions
scale found to be reliable and valid measure of blood phobia in spanish speakers and therefore useful in diagnosing this disorder
weakness lack of generalisability/represented
more females than males in blood phobic group
female n=30 male n=9
matters because BIPI may be better at detection in females than males bc they badly represented in original sample
strength
rigorous statistical analysis used to select the final 18 situations from the original 50
factor analysis used to ensure items that were least helpful in diagnosing were removed
left useful items
important bc all data obtained by psychometric tests shlkd bc useful in identifying vulnerable people who need support
