2 treatments of phobias
systematic desensitisation
flooding
flooding
behavioural therapy in which a person is exposed to an extreme form of phobic stimulus in order to reduce anxiety triggered by the stimulus
systematic desensitisation
behavioural therapy used to reduce the effects of an unwanted response - teaching a person to relax in the situations that give anxiety
3 processes of systematic desnsitisation
anxiety hierarchy
relaxation
exposure
anxiety hierarchy
patient and therapist make a hierarchy of things they find most frightening
relaxation
therapist gets patient to deeply relax - cannot be afraid and relaxed at the same time reciprocal inhabitation - methods such as meditation or vallium
exposure
client will be exposed to the phobic stimulus in a relaxed state - moving up the hierarchy
treatment is successful when patient can endure things at the top of hierarchy
how does flooding work
the conditioned stimulus is presented without the unconditioned stimulus until it no longer triggers a response
