Biodiversity Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is the definition of Biodiversity?
The variety of different organism found in a particular area
What is species richness and evenness?
Richness - The no’ of dif species
Evenness - The relative abundance of each speices
What are the 4 techniques to acquire a representative estimate of biodiversity? (sampling)
Quadrat - key+ count % cover
Pitfall trap -flat surface w cover
Pooter - straw no directly in mouth
Sweeping nets - lil kids
How is random sampling performed and what are its pros and cons?
RNG - coord gen
Pro: Removes biAs
Con: Sample may not be representative - this can be avoided via repetition
What are the 3 types of non random sampling?
Opportunistic - choose where u want
Stratified - No’ of samples in each area are representative to their size
Systematic - Line + belt transect (measure change across areas in habititats)
To calculate biodiversity u use Simpsons index:
D = 1 - Σ (n/N)^2
What does n and N mean?
n= No’ of individual species
N=No’ of individuals of all species (all the n’s added together)
What is the formula for working out genetic biodiversity?
Total number of Loci
What are the 3 benefits of maintaining biodiversity?
Ecological-Better genetic diversity protects species
Aesthetics-Yatah + Inspo
Economics-Ecotourism+Drug devs
What are the 3 factors affecting Biodiversity?
Human growth-We strip mats
Agriculture-grow 1 thing
Climate change-cant adapt=die
What does In situ mean + E.G?
Conservation within natural habitats. E.g Wild life conservation Decreases the number of humans and hunting and marine conservation zone = less overfishing
What does ex situ mean + E.G?
Conservation outside natural habitats E.g Zoos/Captive breeding programs, Botanic gardens and Seed banks
What are the 3 conservation agreements? Respect the 1v1,Blu div, Jon pardi flight attendant
- Convention on international trade of endangered species
- Rio convention on biological diversity - Enforces starts of conservation and biodiversity
- Countryside stewardship scheme - Give money to protect the country side
