BIPOLAR AND RELATED DISORDERS Flashcards
(23 cards)
this diagnostic class is characterized by prominent and prolonged disturbances of mood generally inappropriate to the individual’s life situation
BIPOLAR & RELATED DISORDERS
this symptom refers to the abnormal, persistent elevated, expansive or irritable mood and abnormal, persistent increased goal-directed activity or energy most of the day, nearly every day for at least ONE WEEK (any duration if hospitalized) plus 3 additional symptoms
Manic episode
this symptom refers to the abnormal, persistent elevated, expansive or irritable mood and abnormal, persistent increased goal-directed activity or energy most of the day, nearly every day for at least 4 DAYS plus 3 additional symptoms

BIPOLAR 1 DISORDER
this disorder consists of depressive and manic episodes which alternate and are typically less severe and do not inhibit function.
BIPOLAR II DISORDER
this disorder is characterized by numerous distinct sub-criteria periods with hypomanic symptoms
and periods of depressive symptoms present at least half the time for at least 2 YEARS
1 YEAR IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
Cyclothymic Disorder
what does it mean if the specifier, with rapid cycling is present?
In the context of bipolar disorder, “rapid cycling” means experiencing four or more distinct mood episodes (mania, hypomania, or depression) within a 12-month period
when is a full HYPOMANIC EPISODE that emerges during antidepressant treatment but persists at a fully syndromal level beyond the physiological effect of that treatment sufficient? for a BIPOLAR II DIAGNOSIS?
only sufficient if preceded by a major depressive episode
what are the disorders present in the 3rd DIAGNOSTIC CLASS, BIPOLAR AND RELATED DISORDERS?
Bipolar I Disorder
Bipolar II Disorder
Cyclothymic Disorder

mood disorders
what is the difference between manic and hypomanic?
duration and psychotic features
manic - w psychotic features (1 week)
hypomanic - no psychotic features (4 days)
give me a summary of either major depressive episode, a manic episode, and/or a hypomanic episode
MDE: for at least 2 weeks, the patient feels depressed (or cannot enjoy life) and has problems with eating and sleeping, guilt feelings, low energy, trouble concentrating and thoughts about death
Manic: for at least 1 week, the patient feels elated (or sometimes only irritable) and may be grandiose, talkative, hyperactive, and distractible; bad judgment leads to marked social or work impairment; often patients must be hospitalized
Hypomanic: This is much like a manic episode, but it is briefer and less severe; hospitalization is not required
