DEPRESSIVE DISORDERS
this disorder is characterized by chronic, severe persistent (non-episodic) irritability through frequent verbal and/or behavioral temper outbursts in response to frustration and persistent irritable or angry mood between the outbursts
Frequency: 3 or more times per week
Duration: Symptoms must be present for 12 or more months (no period lasting 3 months without symptoms)
Onset must be before 10 years old
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder

this disorder is characterized by persistent depressed mood and/or loss of interest or pleasure nearly most of the day every day for at least two weeks (plus 4 more symptoms)
Major Depressive Disorder
this disorder is characterized by depressed mood most of the day, for more days than not, for at least 2 years (plus 2 more symptoms
individual has never been without the symptoms during the 2 year period, for more than 2 months at a time
Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)
what are the possible 9 symptoms for MDD?
- Depressed mood most of the day, every day.
- Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities.
- Significant weight loss or weight gain.
- Insomnia or hypersomnia.
- Psychomotor agitation or retardation.
- Fatigue or loss of energy.
- Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt.
- Diminished ability to think or concentrate.
- Recurrent thoughts of death or committing suicide.
what are the other possible symptoms for PDD (Dysthymia)
- Poor appetite or overeating
- Insomnia or hypersomnia
- Low energy or fatigue
- Low self-esteem
- Poor concentration or indecisiveness
- Feelings of hopelessness
what does it mean if the specifier, With peripartum onset is present?
symptoms occur during pregnancy or in the 4 weeks following delivery.
what does it mean if the specifier, With Anxious Distress is present?
presence of AT LEAST TWO of the following symptoms during majority of days of major depressive episode or dysthymia:
- Feeling tense.
- Feeling unusually restless.
- Difficulty concentrating because of worry.
- Fear that something awful will happen.
- Feeling that individual might lose control of self.
this disorder is characterized by mood lability, irritability, dysphoria and anxiety symptoms accompanied by behavioral and physical symptoms that occur repeatedly during premenstrual phase and remit around onset of menses or shortly thereafter
at least 5 SYMPTOMS PRESENT A WEEK before the onset of mens and become minimal or absent in the week postmenses.
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

A. Mood reactivity – mood brightens to actual or potential positive events.
B. Two or more of the following:
- Significant weight gain or increase in appetite.
- Hypersomnia
- Leaden paralysis
- Long-standing pattern of interpersonal rejection sensitivity that result to impairment
what does it mean if the specifier, With mixed features is present?
presence of at least three of the following manic/ hypomanic symptoms are present during major depressive episode:
- Expansive mood
- Grandiosity
- More talkative than usual
- Flight of ideas
- Increase in energy
- Excessive involvement in activities with painful consequences.
- Decreased need for sleep
what does it mean if the specifier, With psychotic features is present?
delusions and/or hallucinations are present.
what does it mean if the specifier, With melancholic features is present?
A. One is present during most severe period of episode:
- Loss of pleasure in almost all activities.
- Lack of reactivity to usually pleasurable stimuli.
B. Three or more of the following:
- A distinct quality of depressed/ empty mood
- Depression regularly worse in the morning.
- Early-morning awakening.
- Psychomotor agitation or retardation.
- Significant anorexia or weight loss.
- Excessive or inappropriate guilt
