Brain And NS 3 Flashcards
(16 cards)
Components of the invertebrate brain
Brain stem, cerebellum, cerebrum
Shark brain
Very simple, deals with autonomic function, sensory input, and motor response, little to no cerebellum/cerebrum
Alligator brain
More developed brain stem, olfactory bulb, and cerebellum, motor responses can be complex, little to no cerebrum
Bird brain
Displays personality and memory, highly developed sense of smell, precise and coordinated motor/sensory systems
Human brain
Complex behaviour, socially aware, conscious, cerebrum is most prominent area, capable of advanced learning and memory, complex personality
Neural tube
Hollow tube of tissue that runs the length of the early embryo on the dorsal surface
Hindbrain components
Cerebellum and pons & medulla (brain stem)
Cerebellum
Intricate control of motor and sensory function
Brain stem
Connects spinal cord and brain, controls involuntary functions
Midbrain
Also part of the brain stem, associated with sensory inputs like vision and olfaction
Forebrain components
Telencephalon and diencephalon
Telencephalon (cerebrum)
Divided into two hemispheres, complex array of lobes, in charge of perception, learning, memory, and conscious behaviour
Diencephalon
Insists of thalamus and hypothalamus
Grey matter
Forms layer over brain surface, highly convoluted, made up of gyri (ridges) and sulci (valleys)
Relight hemisphere associations
Sensory and motor function on the left side of the body
Left hemisphere associations
Sensory and motor function on the right side of the body
