Metabolic Pathways Flashcards
(9 cards)
Glycolysis
Takes place in the cytosol, converts glucose into pyruvate with 10 enzyme-catalysed reactions
Result of glycolysis
2 pyruvate, 2 ATP, 2 NADH
Phosphorylation
Addition of a phosphate group
Substrate-level phosphorylation
Enzyme-catalysed phosphorylation from donor ADP to form ATP
Pyruvate oxidation
Occurs in mitochondrial matrix, pyruvate is oxidised to acetate and CO2 is released, nad+ is reduced to NADH, capturing energy
Inputs of citric acid cycle
Acetal CoA, water, electron carriers (NAD+, FAD, GDP)
Outputs of citric acid cycle
CO2, reduced electron carriers, ADP is converted to ATP
Stages of oxidative phosphorylation
Electron transport, chemiosmosis
Metabolism of glucose
Produces free energy then traps it in ATP
