Cardiovascular drugs Flashcards
(77 cards)
What is this?
The Cardiac Cycle
What is the RAA system?
- Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone system
- Raises BP + conserves Sodium + water
- To restore fluid balance
In basic steps, how does the RAA system work?
- Low BP or Sodium > Triggers kidneys to release Renin
- Renin converts Angiotensionogen (from Liver) > ANGIOTENSIN 1
-
ACE (Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme) from lungs converts Angiotensin 1 > Angiotensin 2 then:
* Causes vasoconstriction of BVs > RAISING BP
* Stimulating ALDOSTERONE release - from adrenal glands
* Causing Sodium + water retention in Kidneys > increasing BV + BP
What is this?
- The Juxtagolmerular apparatus (JGA)
- Specialised structure in the kidneys
- Plays a crucial role in regulating BP, BV + filtration rate of the Glomerulus
-
Located in the Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT), made up of the:
* Macula densa
* Juxtaglomerular cells
* Extraglomerular mesangial cells
What do Cardiovascular drugs generally do?
Act on the:
1. Heart
2. BVs
3. Kidneys
What are the 5 categories of Cardiovascular drugs?
- Positive Inotropes + Chronotropes
- Negative Inotropes + Chronotropes
- Vasodilators
- Anti-dysrhymthmic drugs
- Diuretics
What do Positive Inotropes + Chronotropes do?
- Enhance/Increase:
1. Myocardial CONTRACTILITY
2. HR - Example = Adrenaline
What do Positive Inotropes do?
Increases the FORCE of heart muscle Contraction
What do Positive Chronotropes do?
Increases HR
What is Inotropy?
Stronger contractions
What is Chronotropy?
Faster heart rates
What is Dromotropy?
Faster conduction of AV node
What is Lusitropy?
Faster relaxation
What do Negative Inotropes + Chronotropes do?
Reduce:
1. Contractility
2. HR
* Example = Verapamil + Diltiazem
Name 1 Positive Inotropes + Chronotropes
Adrenaline
Give 2 examples of Negative Inotrope + Chronotrope
- Verapamil
- Diltiazem
How do Vasodilators work?
- Reduces the PRESSURE in the arteries
- Leading to reduction in Cardiac AFTER-load + PRE-load
* Examples = Benazapril + Enalapril*
What are Verapamil & Diltiazem?
Negative Inotropes + Chronotropes
What are Benzapril & Enalapril?
Vasodilators
What are Anti-dysrhymthmic drugs?
- They normalise heart rhythm
- Examples = Propanalol + Digoxin*
Name 2 Anti-dysrhymthmic drugs
- Propanalol
- Digoxin
What are Diuretics?
- Act upon the Urinary system
- To Increase production of urine
* Example = Frusemide
Name a Diuretic
Frusemide
Some cardiovascular drugs have more than 1 effect.
Name the cardiovascular drug that is a Positive Inotrope, but also has Vasodilator properties?
