ch29: env cond Flashcards
(8 cards)
wha controls thermoregulation
hypothalamus
what activates heat-regulating mechanisms
1- stimulation of peripheral thermal receptors in the skin
2- changes in blood temperature as it flows through the hypothalamus
radiation
loss of heat from a warmenr object to a cooler object in the form of infrared waves
factor affecting skin sweat evaporation
- skin surface exposed to the env
- temp and relative humidity of the ambient air
- convective air currents around the body
hydration parameters
- preercersie: 500-600ml 2-3h before
200-300ml 10-20min - exercise: 200-300ml every 10-20min
- postexercise: within 2h 150% of weight loss
miliaria rubra vs miliaria profunda
r- seen in humid climates or with skin totally covered by clothing. sweat glands are occluded with organic debris and can no longer produce sweat for evaporation
rubrA= heat rash is localized
profound = cond becomes more generalized and prolonged
s/s
- inflamed, itchy skin
raynauds syndrome
- caused by underlying didease or anatomical abnormality, source often unknown
- fingers become cold, pale and numb
followed by hyperemia w/ redness, throbbing pain and swelling
degrees of frosbite
1st= skin is soft to the touch and appears initially red, then white, and usually painless. typically noticed by others first
2nd= skin is firme to the touch, but tissue beneath is soft and initially appears red and swollen. Diffuse numbness maybe preceded by an itchy or prickly sensation. white or waxy skin color may appear later
3rd= skin is hard to the touch,, totally numb, and appears blotchy white to yellow-gray or blue-gray
