Q

Main context-How can phobias be treated? How have they been treated so far?

A

Psychological therapies can be used to treat both the psychological and physiological symptoms of phobias
1. CBT: Anthony et al (2001) demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for specific phobias, including BIIP. CBT pushes the individual to to challenge and replace irrational thoughts with more rational ones.- which leads to changes in behavioural and emotional responses (which eventually extinguishes the phobia)
However, BIIP also requires behavioural/ physiological interventions to prevent fainting and keep patient conscious during the psychological therapy (example- applied muscle tension/ systematic desensitisation)
