Factors known to improve the quality of the therapeutic relationship:
empathy, goal consensus and collaboration, positive regard and affirmation, alliance ruptures, and managing countertransference
Factors used to tailor therapy to the client’s characteristics:
reactance level, stage of change, preferences, culture, coping style, and religion/spirituality
An individualized application of your theoretical model that takes into consideration the antecedents of the case and your observations and inferences.

Four major factors to consider as you move toward identifying your own personal style and integrating the many available theories:
1) your own personal authenticity
2) the needs, goals, and style of the client
3) the context and multicultural, social justice, and advocacy needs of the client
4) your own life goals, values, worldview, vision, and wisdom
The working hypothesis used to guide treatment, and it will evolve over sessions
Case formulation
This will help you make decisions about the treatment plan, select interventions, assign homework, cope with setbacks, assess outcomes, determine paths to action, and complete treatment.
Case formulation
Specific written goals and objectives, when possible, negotiated with the client. May be structured using the 5 stages–including highlights from each stage, summarizes issues, includes decisions, interventions, and shifts in topic direction, captures generalization/homework plans.
