Q

Polyuria

A

Condition of excessive urination

poly- = excessive
ur/o = urine
-ia = condition

17
Q

Tetany

A

continuous muscle spasms

18
Q

Acromegaly

A

Hypersecretion of somatotropin from the adenohypophysis during adulthood; leads to an enlargement of the extremities (hands and feet), jaw, nose, and forehead

Usually caused by an adenoma of the pituitary gland

acro- = extremities
-megaly = enlargement

19
Q

Gigantism

A

Hypersecretion of somatotropin from adenohypophysis during childhood, leading to excessive growth

20
Q

Hyperthyroidism

A

Excessive thyroid hormone production

Aka thyrotoxicosis, the most common form of which is Graves disease, which may be accompanied by exophthalmia

Ketonuria is a diagnostic sign

hyper- = excessive
thyroid/o = thyroid gland
-ism = condition

21
Q

Hypothyroidism

A

Deficient thyroid hormone production

If it occurs during childhood, it causes a condition called cretinism, which results in stunted mental and physical growth

The extreme adult form is called myxedema, which is characterized by facial and orbital edema

hypo- = deficient
thyroid/o = thyroid gland
-ism = condition

22
Q

Hyperparathyroidism

A

Overproduction of PTH

symptoms include polyuria, hypercalcemia, hypertension, and kidney stones

hyper- = excessive
parathyroid/o = parathyroid gland
-ism = condition

23
Q

Hypoparathyroidism

A

Deficient PTH production results in tetany, hypocalcemia, irritability, and muscle cramps

hypo- = deficient
parathyroid/o = parathyroid gland
-ism = condition

24
Q

Adrenalectomy

A

Bilateral removal of the adrenal glands to reduce excess hormone secretion

adrenal/o = adrenal gland
-ectomy = excision

25
Hypophysectomy
Excision of the pituitary gland; usually done to remove a pituitary tumor hypophys/o = pituitary gland -ectomy = excision
26
Pancreatectomy
Excision of all or part of the pancreas to remove a tumor or to treat an intractable inflammation of the pancreas pancreat/o = pancreas -ectomy = excision
27
Pancreatoduodenectomy
Excision of the head of the pancreas together with the duodenum; used to treat pancreatic cancer Also called Whipple procedure. pancreat/o = pancreas duoden/o = duodenum -ectomy = excision
28
Parathyroidectomy
Removal of the parathyroid gland, usually to treat hyperparathyroidism parathyroid/o = parathyroid gland -ectomy = excision
29
Thyroidectomy
Removal of part or all of the thyroid gland to treat goiter, tumor, or hyperthyroidism that does not respond to medication Removal of most, but not all, of this gland results in a regrowth of the gland with normal function. If cancer is detected, a total thyroidectomy is performed thyroid/o = thyroid gland -ectomy = excision
